First things first – this is not about the disco group that is known for quirky costumes and singing YMCA.  Glad we got that cleared up :). Over the past few months a number of letters to editors,  events in communities and a recent comment by  a friend have had the phrase ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ percolating in my mind.   This is one of those comfort phrases I think we are supposed to say, but many never wrestle with.  The phrase itself has African roots –…

I spent 32 years of my life living in Strathcona County.  I was born and raised in that community and have a great love for the people that make it up.  It is a community that often loses it’s college students to see them return when they are married, desiring the same community experience they had growing up for their own children.  In many ways it was no surprise that Strathcona County ranked high in the Canadian magazine’s annual “Best Places to Live” article.  In one  specific category Strathcona County…

Recently a friend and colleague asked a question on facebook – “Should Canada reopen the abortion debate?”.  I found myself hesitating on the question.  I want to be clear.  I do not agree with abortion and I believe it is wrong – especially when used as a form of birth control.  My hesitation on the the question was not with my ethical viewpoint but with how many have handled themselves in this discussion in the past, and how this issue has been handled since the ‘debate’ was closed.  So below…

Wednesday morning in our staff meeting I read part of Psalm 145.  Psalm 145 is a Psalm of Praise… though perhaps describing it as a psalm ‘Gushing with Praise’ may be more appropriate.  The first three verses read: I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. 2 I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. 3 Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. It’s hard not to smile or laugh…

1) You can’t hide your children from technology – it’s everywhere.  You may say ‘no’ to your children but they are able to access technology, the internet, and media at school, the library and at friends houses.   Don’t pretend your children aren’t exposed to it.  This creates an avenue to talk about it. 2) Facebook does not let children on facebook who are 12 and under.  To do this you must lie. 3) You do not need a computer or laptop to access the internet.  Cell phones, TV’s, and video…

It is so easy in our world to look around see sin.  When the lifestyle of a person is counter to what we expect or what we value we will label a person a non-Christian.  In some ways it makes us feel better about ourselves – perhaps even superior.   The line is not always so clear. In 2001 a young woman, 16 years old, named Katy Hudson splashed onto the Christian music scene with her first album.   With songs such as “Trust in Me” and “Faith Won’t Fail” the messages…

Scripture tells us that we, as people, are made in the image of God.  The media of the world tells us we need to be remade in a new image.  Our culture has created a new set of images of what is perfect, what is normal, and what is right.   Those images are not realistic nor are they healthy. What does it mean to be made in the image of God?  What does beauty mean? These are questions that have been asked for centuries… and are not easy to answer. …
